This match is by some referred to as: "the match that started the war". Tensions had been building up gradually in Jugoslavia ever since Tito died 1980 and it all started to accelerate out of control around 1989 in a melting pot of nationalism, religious identification, demonizing of other sides (from all sides) and in the end, demands of separation from Yugoslavia proper. This phenomenon even gave birth to a new word: Balkanization. Then this match happened, or actually it didn't, because the match never kicked off. But from that day people started to realize that war was inevitable. The home team, Dinamo Zagreb with its supporters Bad Blue Boys, supported Croatian separatism while the away team, Red Star Belgrade with its supporters Delije (heroes), wanted to keep Yugoslavia intact. Željko Ražnatović aka "Arkan" was the leader of Delije during this time. Soon he started a paramilitary formation "Tigers" made up of, among others, football supporters. At 01:19 Zvonimir Boban famuosly karate kicks a Yugoslavian policeman and some say the person briefly seen at 00:50 in the gray suit might be Arkan.
