Bull Runners Gored In Pamplona Street Fiesta

Two Spaniards and a US tourist are in hospital after a bull charged into runners in a race through Pamplona's cobbled streets. Three men have been gored by bulls while racing through Pamplona as part of the Spanish town's San Fermin festival. The three runners, a 20-year-old American and two Spaniards aged 31 and 42, have all been taken to hospital. The run, in which participants are pursued through the town's ancient cobbled streets by the bulls, turned dangerous when a half-tonne black bull, part of the galloping herd of six sharp-horned bulls and six steers, separated and began charging into runners. The animal charged at one of the Spanish victims and tossed him around with its horns for almost 30 seconds as fellow runners tried to pull the beast away by its tail. The man clung to one of the horns as screams were heard all around. Helpers eventually dragged the victim to safety by his feet. The American man who was gored has so far only been identified by his initials - PE. He was reportedly injured in the abdomen. None of the six taken to the hospital were said to be in a serious condition. "A lot of people fell along the route, it was really dangerous," said Alan Carpenter, a 38-year-old banker from Chicago after taking part in his third Pamplona bull run. The gorings were the first of this year's runs, during which thousands of thrill-seekers race daily with the bulls along a 850-metre 930-yard route from a holding pen to the city bull ring. Friday's event lasted just under five minutes, roughly double the normal length. Longer runs normally occur when some of the bulls get separated from the pack and become disoriented and more dangerous. The black bull which caused most of the panic made several more attempts to charge at people before he was eventually guided along the narrow streets to join the rest for the pack in the pen of the packed bull ring. The bulls that take part each morning are invariably killed by matadors in evening bull fights, and their meat is served up in Pamplona's restaurants. Many participants, dressed in white with red kerchiefs round their necks, drink all night before the early morning run. Dozens of people are injured each year in the "encierros," as the runs are called in Spanish. Most get hurt after tripping and falling in the rush. The fighting bulls used in the centuries-old fiesta can weigh up to at 1,380lbs (625kgs) and have killed 15 people since record-keeping began in 1924. The most recent death took place four years ago when a bull gored a 27-year-old Spaniard in the neck, heart and lungs
